Plain soap versus bacteria...Who wins?...You!!!

Plain soap versus bacteria...Who wins?...You!!!

December 06, 2016

I read an interesting article regarding the FDA ban on Antibacterial soaps (http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/09/02/492394717/fda-bans-19-chemicals-used-in-antibacterial-soaps?utm_campaign=storyshare) and I started thinking back to the beginning of my nursing career when our instructors drilled into us the importance of hand washing

.

Back in the day (I am dating myself here) using plain soap and water was sufficient. Plain soap works by loosening and lifting dirt and microbes to be rinsed away by the water unlike antibacterial soap which may (can or does) leave chemicals behind and like the saying goes “what does not kill you makes you stronger” bacteria develops defense mechanism against those chemicals and voila!.... a super bug is born!

This is not to say that antibacterial products should all be banned, there is a place, a time and a use for them. Prevention and  good hygiene are the key and remember……plain soap and water works!

Enjoy a plain bar of soap your body will thank you for it!
